are gun permits public record

Is there a way to see who has recently received a gun permit in your county or state?
is it public record?

By permit are you referring to the permit to buy or the permit to carry concealed? NC has that stupid permit to buy thing going on. Neighboring states are not so dense. However, at least in TN, concealed permits are public record and a anti-gun nut made a point of publishing the list and drawing a great deal of attention to it. In fact, that person created a website where you can look people up and get their address and know they have a CCW.

In some states, it is, in some states it isnt. Like SLV said, in Tenn, ccw permits ARE public record, here in Florida, there is a state law prohibiting that information from being available to the public (texas has a similar law IRRC).

You'd likley have to call up some county record keeping authority and ask them, or do a google search because it varies SOOO much around the country and in counties within a state.

I wouldn't mind having a few of my chatty curtain-twitching neighbors know I have a concealed permit. They now keep their distance since I started playing Alex Jones while out in the yard or washing the vehicles.

I think you're correct. But it wasn't always the case. When CCWs first came out in FL, they were public record. But the law you refer to, IIRC, came about when some commie rags (South FL Sun-Sentinal was one) published the names of CCW holders, and an Orlando TV station posted the list on their website.

It's only been since 2005 or 2006 when they finally changed this law - naturally, the commie rags like the Florida Times Union believe this law should be repealed in the "interest of public safety."

In NC, concealed carry permits are public record. One local newspaper even publishes the names of the new permit holders every week!

Regular pistol purchase permits (non-CC), I'm not sure........

To know the State you live in would be a starting point. Like others said in some States they're public, others not. Then if public, how public is the next question. Are the CCW licenses kept by the issuing authority or shared/forwarded to other agencies who have open records laws to deal with. (Does the sheriff issue the CCW and forward a copy to the state police or is the only available copy kept for public inspection by the sheriff? - Centralized records location vs. decentralized.)

As mentioned above, it depends on the locality.

A counterattack that has been used against newspapers and media outlets that publish names of CCW permit holders is to widely spread the publicly available information (names, addresses, e-mail, phone numbers, etc.) of the owners, editors and reporters responsible.

Just sayin'.

This has been a hot topic in Indiana recently:

Editorial from the Indianapolis Star:

Quote:

Our Opinion

What we don't know can hurt us

When the first two items in the Bill of Rights are at odds, there's no such thing as an easy choice.

The Indiana General Assembly must keep that uncomfortable reality in mind as it considers a bill to forbid information about gun permits from being released to the public.
http://www.indystar.com/gcicommonfil...label_horz.gif

A House committee on Thursday unanimously approved the measure, which is a reaction to stories and databases published by The Star and the Bloomington Herald-Times documenting the ease with which permits are obtained by persons who should not have them.

We had hoped for a different reaction from the legislature.

In its StarWatch investigation, whose results were published Oct. 11, this newspaper found hundreds of cases in which Indiana State Police granted gun permits to applicants whose police records allowed, and often may have required, denial under state law. The passes frequently were given over objections of local police. Many of the permit-holders went on to commit more crimes.

Tighter enforcement and modernized recordkeeping would seem to have been an imperative for the legislature in light of this watchdog work. Instead, the news media and the public have been identified as the problem.

Rep. Peggy Welch, D-Bloomington, author of House Bill 1068, argues that both gun owners and non-owners might be endangered if their names and addresses are not kept secret. Her bill would allow release only of general information, such as the number of permits issued per county.

Unfortunately, that restriction of access to public records would have made the newspaper revelations impossible. And those revelations alerted the community to real danger.

While the papers took care not to publish names or addresses, it was only by knowing them, via access to the state database, that reporters could learn about the permit-holder who held a gun to his girlfriend's head, the one who pressed a gun into the chest of a woman holding a baby, the one whose pistol was confiscated three times, twice for shooting in public.

The list of bad characters with legal weapons goes on and on, and yet state law requires good character for gun permits. The news media were able to expose this intolerable discrepancy thanks to government openness, which always makes for nervousness. When it serves the cause of responsible gun ownership and public safety, the First Amendment value exceeds the Second Amendment cost.
1st, the Star is owned by Gannet Newspapers (USA Today)

2nd, they parade the strawman of "look at all of the creeps we found, but we can't show specific's 'cause of"

3rd, and most importantly, They have lost sight of the fact that the Second amendment re-affirms all of the others. Without the second amendment the 1st isn't worth the paper that it's printed on.
